For Jaite, Nalbandian played "asleep" and did not react

Martin Jaite, coach of Nalbandian, admitted that his players "gave too many advantages" to the Spanish Juan Carlos Ferrero, who defeated without extenuating circumstances. "The player is human, not sometimes wakes up well," said the former number 12 of world.
Martin Jaite, coach of the Argentinian David Nalbandian, admitted today that his player was "asleep" and "lack of reaction" in his blunt defeat to the Spanish Juan Carlos Ferrero in the third round of Australian Open tennis.

"He slept with lack of reaction. Gave too many advantages, began very erratic, asleep, and with this kind of players you need to be one hundred percent", analyzed Jaite after the 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3 defeat against Ferrero in one hour and 44 minutes.

"These are things that happen in tennis, the player is a human being, there are times that does not wake up well," added Jaite, who will fly tomorrow heading to Buenos Aires. "Nobody likes to lose, coming with expectation. Obviously David should not be happy with the performance."

Nalbandian, who turned 26 on January 1, is more tentative assessing his chances to become No.1, but still brings the subject to the table. "I'll go for it, no doubt. Of course, it's extremely difficult. What Federer does is out of this world, winning almost every tournament he plays. But at least I will say I'm going to try."

"My first Grand Slam, an Olympic medal in Beijing and the Davis Cup," Nalbandian says of his ambitious hit-list for 2008. "Each one represents a different satisfaction - the first one, rather individual; the others would mean to leave my mark on the sport's history in Argentina."

Coach says Nalbandian 'is seeking glory'

Melbourne - Martin Jaite, the coach that helped David Nalbandian out of the tennis doldrums in late 2007, said Wednesday that the Argentine has very high hopes for this season. "David is seeking glory," Jaite - a former top-10 player himself - told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Nalbandian, currently ranked 10th, experienced an unexpected rise in late 2007, winning consecutive tournaments in Madrid and Paris- Bercy and beating world number 1 Roger Federer and number 2 Rafael Nadal on two occasions each.

Until then, his year had been mediocre, with the quarter-finals in Barcelona as his best result. Poor results had relegated the Argentine to 25th in the world ranking.

Nalbandian insisted Tuesday in Melbourne that he aims to "win a Grand Slam, the Davis Cup and (Olympic) gold" in 2008.

Jaite is not scared at the high expectations.

"Those seem like good, clear goals to me. We think David is going to have a good year, a balanced year. We do not specifically aim at winning the Australian Open, because currently David has to aim at winning all tournaments he takes part in. That is what he is doing, also in Australia. He aims to win this tournament like any other," the coach explained.
